Why We're Shitty for Turning on Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is a sharp tongued raptress who is just as good at writing sonically restless raps that describe life as a woman in NYC as she is calling out those who deserve it. But, as you know, an opinionated black women with lethal wit and great social knowledge is a "threat" to the fragile image of the music industry. Banks is known for calling out hipocrisy in the music and entertainment industries and is known for speaking out on the appropriation of hip hop by white artists. Mostly, Banks is known for her interview with Charlamagne Tha God, host of a very famous radio show, where she broke down the history of hip hop and how it applies to disenfranchised black youth. In this interview, Banks makes her case that hip hop has no room for artists like Iggy Azalea and Macklemore, two white artists who have dominated hip hop and used their privilege to undermine the successes of black artists like Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj. Banks says that the aforementioned artists ha...

Queer Eye is Making Gay the new Black

Being a gay man is a very chic lifestyle nowadays. It's becoming very trendy to live your life as an out-and-proud male, but only if you're muscularly built, conventionally attractive, and adorn yourself with fashionable clothing. Queer Eye, the new re-imagined Netflix show, emphasizes this point, too. I really like the show because it's representation in the media and it's put queerness into perspectives for a newer and larger audience. I've seen "coming out" become a table topic in many families. After seeing the show, close friends of mine decided to take the next step in identifying their sexual orientation and came out to their families. These steps, while they might seem small to some, are huge milestones in the lives of queer individuals. This new show is so encouraging to see because it's airing a new identity that was stigmatized and shamed in the media not even 15 years ago. This introduction to a queer narrative shows that the gay agenda pr...

Ariana Grande Saved the Gays

4/20 is regarded as a national holiday for those that participate in the counterculture of marijuana. This beacon of light brings joy to a population of people. But, 4/20 was forever re-imagined when the Heiress of Pop Ariana Grande came for blood when she released her newest song "No Tears Left to Cry". On this day, in 2018, Ariana Grande became the next patron saint of homosexuality. Ariana Grande has always been an out-and-proud Queer activist. I remember when I was a younger gay, I sat close to the stage for Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour and during the final performance of "Dangerous Woman", dazzling flames shot up from the back of the stage and Ariana in her pint-sized glory, pulled out a rainbow flag and catwalked down the stage, hitting every note like a knock-out punch. I was shaken. I could only imagine that this was the gays felt when the first rock at Stonewall was thrown. You could say I was floored. With the release of this single, dozens of...

Naming of the New Residence Hall

UNT is attempting to make history by potentially naming their newest residence hall after a former DOS worker that passed away in the beginning of the semester. The news first broke, to me, after SGA Student Body President Barrett Cole tweeted a copy of the bill that was signed and endorsed by SGA. The most remarkable part of this is that this will be UNTs first, and only, building named after a person of color. This decision sparked a lot of controversy because- surprise surprise- our university isn't as inclusive as we'd like to believe. In mid-February, Nancy Kolstki, a spokesperson for the university, resigned for "personal reasons", those being-- she made a complaint that naming the new residence hall after a black man was "reverse racism". Kolstski said that in order for the residence hall to be named in the most unbiased fashion possible, we must look at it through the lens of color and gender blindness. Which, to be honest, is just as stupid as the c...

Krispy Krunchy Racism

UNT finds itself in the spotlight again for yet another infamous reason. Though we may try to clean up our appearance as a university, nothing shows the world our whole ass more than a racist scandal. Communications major Chelsea Shaw received an anti-black racial slur on the top of her receipt where her name was supposed to go. The student took to twitter to immediately share her criticisms of the university union and Krispy Krunchy Chicken, the restaurant where she was dining, with the whole internet. Almost immediately, the tweet caught ablaze and is still being talked about right now. With thousands of retweets and close to ten thousand favorites, the tweet has left it's mark on campus and will go down as a story for at least the next four years. It took a lot, but now we're really seeing that a university that prides itself on equity and inclusion is all smoke and mirrors. UNT, as a university, has done its best to portray itself as a majority-minority school that foster...
